Rose Bowl Competitions

Participants in the Rose Bowl competitions are nominated by the Senior Adjudicator(s) in each eligible  discipline. The Adjudicator has the right to recommend fewer than the maximum number of competitors  indicated for each competition, or that the competition not be held in any given year. 

Nominations are based upon each candidate’s festival performances. In consultation with the Festival’s Artis tic Committee, the Adjudicator has the right to award a Rose Bowl without a Rose Bowl performance and to  award the Rose Bowl without a competition. Rose Bowls will be awarded at the Gala Concert. 

Should a Rose Bowl competition be held, those recommended for the competition shall perform on the date  and time for which the competition is scheduled. Entrants who have been recommended, and are unable to  perform for any reason, may not have their performance rescheduled. Adjudicators may recommend a winner  or they may, in their absolute discretion, decline to recommend an award.

Rose Bowl Prizes

The winner of a Rose Bowl will be awarded a keeper plaque and a cash prize of $1,000. 

The Nova Scotia Kiwanis Music Festival reserves the right to award the Rose Bowl and the accompanying  monetary prize on the recommendation of the Adjudicator in consultation with the Festival Artistic Commit tee. All Rose Bowl winners, whether by acclamation or as a result of a competition, will be invited to perform  at our Gala Concert.

ROSE BOWL AWARD CRITERIA - PIANO 

Doctor Piano and Yamaha Canada Piano Rose Bowl 

The Doctor Piano and Yamaha Canada Piano Rose Bowl Competition will be between a maximum  of five (5) of the most outstanding pianists recommended by the Senior Piano Adjudicator. 

These nominees will have competed in the following Open-level classes: 

  1. Open Bach Class or Open Solo Baroque Class; 
  2. Open Solo Sonata Class; 
  3. Open Concerto Class; 
  4. One other Open Solo Class; 
  5. Open Sight Reading Class. 

Required repertoire for the Piano Rose Bowl competition will be the following two pieces: 1. Concerto from the Open Concerto Class: 

  1. One other Open Level selection. (If this selection is from the Open Sonata class, students have  the option of performing 1 or 2 movements.) 
  2. Repertoire for the Piano Rose Bowl competition must be performed from memory. 

 

ROSE BOWL AWARD CRITERIA - VOICE 

The Sheila K. Piercey Memorial Voice Rose Bowl Competition 

The Sheila K. Piercey Memorial Voice Rose Bowl competition will be between a maximum of five (5) of the most outstanding senior vocalists recommended by the Voice Adjudicator. 

These nominees will have competed in three or more Advanced Concert level classes including: 1. Solo Opera – Advanced Concert; 

  1. Solo Art Song – Advanced Concert and/or Solo Lieder – Advanced Concert; 
  2. Sight Reading – Advanced Concert. 

Required repertoire for the Voice Rose Bowl competition: 

  1. Selection performed in the Solo Opera – Advanced Concert Class; 
  2. One other Solo – Advanced Concert selection. 

Repertoire for the Voice Rose Bowl Competition must be performed from memory. 

ROSE BOWL AWARD CRITERIA - STRINGS 

The String Music Atlantic String Rose Bowl Competition 

The String Music Atlantic String Rose Bowl competition will be between a maximum of five (5) of the  most outstanding String players recommended by the String Adjudicator(s). 

These nominees will have competed in the following Open-level classes: 

  1. Open Solo; 
  2. Open Solo - Bach; 
  3. Open Sonata; 
  4. Open Concerto; 
  5. Open Sight Reading Class. 

Required repertoire for the String Rose Bowl competition: 

  1. Concerto from the Open Concerto class; 
  2. One other Open-level selection. (If this selection is from the Open Sonata class, students have the option  of performing 1 or 2 movements.) 

Repertoire for the String Rose Bowl Competition - with the exception of the Open Sonata class - must be  performed from memory.

 

ROSE BOWL AWARD CRITERIA - BRASS AND WOODWINDS 

The Kim and Heather Conrad Brass and Woodwind Rose Bowl Competition 

The Kim and Heather Conrad Brass and Woodwind Rose Bowl competition will be between a maximum  of three (3) of the most outstanding Brass players recommended by the Brass Adjudicator and a maxi mum of three (3) of the most outstanding Woodwind players chosen by the Woodwind Adjudicator. 

These nominees will have competed in the following classes: 

Brass

  1. Open Concerto for Brass; 
  2. Open Brass Concert Group; 
  3. Open Brass Sight Reading. 

Woodwind

  1. Open Concerto for Woodwind; 
  2. Open Woodwind Concert Group; 
  3. Open Woodwind Sight Reading. 

Required repertoire for the Brass and Woodwind Rose Bowl competition: 

the concerto movement(s) from the Open Concerto class. 

Memorization of repertoire for the Brass and Woodwind Rose Bowl Competition is encouraged but not required.
